 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
From my parking spot for Cambridge Black SE Peak, I drove west along the road for about 1.9mi to where there’s an overgrown logging road diverging. If coming from the west, this spot is about 3.5mi from the right turn onto this road. With my car I was able to drive the couple hundred feet on this overgrown road to the end of the clearing and park. The roads in often have many small rocks on them as they seem to be ATV trails. This road that’s in between Bald Mtn and the Cambridges isn’t as rocky but does have some larger rocks protruding from it. Not sure a low clearance car would make it. Mid clearance will do fine. |

Day 311, Peak 289. 2nd peak of the day after Cambridge Black SE. From the clearing, I took the obvious old road continuing beyond to the N/NW. When it got too thick or wet, I walked to the left of it in the woods. Things were still pretty wet from the recent rain and the sun didn’t come out as early as predicted. I realized that these roads were taking me closer to the logged areas than the ridge though so I soon just started bushwhacking up in the young woods. Woods were easy to walk in though young and I still found some old skidder paths to walk along. Grades were easy at first, becoming steeper as you approached the knob SE of the summit. I slabbed your around this knob to the col which worked okay though there some very steep stuff just before the col. Flat, easy walk from here to the summit.
The register was easy to find. I signed in and returned down the mountain. Two things I did different on my return trip: 1) I slabbed down sooner, not from the col and this worked better, 2) I stuck to the true ridge down low by the car rather than swinging north along the old roads toward the logging cuts to the north. This is a straighter line so slightly more efficient but the woods weren’t any better/worse. I still found similar overgrown skidder roads and old skidder roads through here. I might recommend that rather than continue down the obvious road from where you park at the end of the clearing, you instead look for an old road and opening in the woods to your left.
The hike was about 1.75mi with 600ft of gain. Took me 1hr15min to complete. 54 more days and 76 more peaks to go… |
