 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
With a mid-clearance vehicle, you can easily get in the ATV road that travels between the Cambridges and Bald Mtn. The roads in are very rocky at times so aren’t too fun. I don’t think a low clearance car would make it on all these roads. I parked at the logging road shown S/SW of the peak. This is almost 5.5mi from the last turn onto this road. |

Day 311, Peak 288. 1st of the day. I walked gently uphill for 0.6mi E/NE along the overgrown logging road shown on Gaia to where it ends in a clearing. Note that there was another clearing a short ways into the road too; just continue to the far side of it and you’ll pick up the road again. At the the end of the road, there appeared to be a couple of skidder paths leaving from here. I checked my bearing and took whichever one made most directional sense. There were one or two forks along these roads and I again just checked my bearing and chose the better option. The roads were very overgrown and I eventually took to the young hardwoods next to them. Woods weren’t bad but soon became very steep as I made my way up the southern ridge of the peak. No cliff bands; just some small boulders to make your way around. The woods also began to transition here. By the time the grade eases and you have a long, flat walk to the summit, you’re in the softwoods. Some ferns and such in here as well. Pretty open. Thickened up around on the southern subpeak before opening again at the true summit.
Don’t be discouraged by the yellow X on the tree that you’ll probably see before you see the black canister. Just look around. There’s a jar about 100-150ft NE along a narrow herd path through the spruce to another possible high point. That register goes much further back to 1999. The wire or insulator or whatever it is, is hung in a tree on the summit. No other relics from the firetower were seen. I returned on roughly the same line. The hike was 3.5-3.75 I’m with 1200ft of gain and it took me about 2hr45min to complete. 54 more days and 77 more peaks to go… |
