Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parking at Long Pond Road is limited, maybe 4 vehicles can fit. At rt. 25, there's room for 50+ with the roadsides available.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Rock hop near rt. 25. Maybe dip your toes.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Large blow down on the bridge crossing just south of Long Pond Road trail head, which has damaged the bridge. Been there for a while, which is surprising as it's the AT. Also, much of the bog bridge/puncheon section is rotted and deteriorating badly. Again, interseting that it has not been addressed with the amount of traffic this sees.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Easy enough for our pooch. Very good footing and grades.
Bugs
Bugs: OK, this was the main purpose for this post. There is a LARGE ground nest of yellow jackets in the base of a tree on the west side of the trail about 0.15 miles from the rte. 25 trailhead. We were a group of 4, and a dog, so when the dog and first 2 passed the tree all was good. THen the last two came through and it was like the bees scene from "Wicker Man". A cloud of angry buggers swarmed and my daughter and wife were stung about 20 times each (daughter getting the worst). They ran through and I brushed about 15-20 more off of each of them. We continued on and they soaked wounds in the brook, but I had to go back for the truck, as we had planned to do a redlining out and back. On the way, the dog and I sprinted through the area and made it through mostly unscathed. I think I got 2, he got 0 as far as I can tell. If you are coming NOBO you can see this before you get to it; small caliper tree with a semi-hollow trunk about 0.1 from the brook. I think they'd be ok if they hadnt been disturbed yet. From the north, the swarm/nest is hidden behind the tree unfortunately, but it is just after you come down a hill leading to the brook. Sorry for anyone who needs to feel their rath! I posted a note at the TH sign on rt. 25 to warn thru hikers, but fear some may miss it or get stung anyways. Heed the warning; if the boys are a buzzin' run!
