Comments
Comments: I hesitate to write too much about this (I want this to be a hidden secret), but since the NE Trail Conditions community is relatively small...what a gem. Whitewall has been on my short to-do list and did not disappoint. The ascent up the main slide from Ethan Pond Trail was very fair and straight-forward albeit steep. As others have mentioned it is similar in feel to the Mount Tripyramid slide without the ledges (mostly loose rock). Ironically, it's almost safer to do this slide alone or with one other person as the risk of dislodging rocks is quite high. Once you pass through the granite cliff gateway near the top, search for ledge ground and work south to the open ledges and incredible views into the Pemi. For those interested, the canister and true summit is on the ESE side of the highest contours of most maps. Coming from the slide (west) or south ledges (SW), keep working ENE until you pass a swampy area, then a quick scramble up another 20 feet gets you up to the final plateau. Bushwhacked NNE to the A-Z Trail and back to the parking area. Highly recommended hike!
