We did a redlining lollipop loop in the Great Gulf. The Great Gulf Trail is in good condition, just pay attention at all the trail intersections after The Bluff. The first big cliff on the Wamsutta Trail is the most difficult, great views once we got above tree line. It took us 2 hours to get up. We took the sno-cat trail down to the Chandler Brook Trail to avoid walking on the road on a busy Sunday afternoon. The snow-cat trail is a little rough and overgrown in places, not sure we saved any time. Chandler Brook Trail is very rough, but does follow a spectacular waterfall. Going down the initial talus field, look for a cairn on the left leading to the trail and then follow 2 cairns across the talus leading back to the trail on the right. We walked in the water at the second stream crossing to avoid getting near the edge of the waterfall. At what appears to be a fourth stream crossing, the trail turns left at the edge of the stream, look for a cairn. The whole trip took 10 hours. Except for a steady stream of exiting backpackers in the morning we only saw 4 other people. |
