Most of the route was in good shape. Just above the steep portion of the Walden trail, below the end of the Square Ledge trail, there is a large blowdown (spruce, I think), across the trail. Squeezing under and around the branches wasn't too bad, but it at least ought to be limbed. I would have limbed it with the foldup saw, but I was with a group and didn't want to delay them. On the steeps, there were some wet exposed ledge spots, with loose gravel, making for a hazardous and slow descent. There is a lot of off-trail erosion around these places. |

Nice day in the Sandwich Wilderness with four other OTHH. We saw absolutely no others on the trails the whole day. We did the counterclockwise loop from Ferncroft. After Square Ledge itself, continuing on to where the trail intersects the Walden trail involves considerable elevation gain with no peak to show for it, then descends all of that gain. |
