Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Brook crossings on Glen Boulder are easy on rocks
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trail sign for Isolation Spur is missing. Bog bridges on Davis Path are disintegrated and only marginally useful. Steppingstones in the perpetual mud spots would be helpful. One tree fall spot on Davis Path uphill from jct with Isolation West. Three trunks of which none are more than 5" diameter. The lowest trunk is about two feet above ground. Hikers have the option of sliding under or walking over the dead tree. Scrub sections on upper part of Glen Boulder needs to be trimmed as the branches are crowding the trail. The same is true in some of the blowdown spots on the Davis Path. Excellent rock steps on lower section of the Glen Boulder Trail.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Fine for dogs. Some dogs may need assistance in one ledge spot on Glen Boulder.
Bugs
Bugs: None

Comments
Comments: Decided to use the Glen Boulder approach to Mt Isolation in order to avoid any watery mess on the Rocky Branch approach and to enjoy the alpine zone section of the hike. The downside to this route is the 5,050 foot elevation gain that includes a 1,500 foot ascent to the Davis-Glen Boulder junction on the return to the trailhead. I would not recommend this approach in wet weather as the rocks on the Glen Boulder trail would be slippery. This route would also be a poor choice on a very windy day due to the exposure above tree line.
Saw alpine goldenrod, bunchberry, mountain sandwort, and low rattlesnake root.
Nice views from the alpine zone, open spots on the Davis Path, and on Mt Isolation.
One hiker from Lynnfield MA completed the 48 on Mt Isolation. Nice chatting with Julie and Laura from seacoast NH/ME. Met to graduated NU students on the summit. Had a nice conversation with a Quebec couple on the Davis Path. Many other hikers enjoying the day. The consensus was that the Rocky Branch approach wasn't bad as the river crossings weren't challlenging.
