Trails: Winniweta Falls Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, July 17, 2022
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Room for maybe 4-5 cars in the dirt parking area on the side of Route 16. One car there when I arrived, only mine when I got back.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The ford of the Ellis River at the beginning of the trail was an easy wade - the water never made it up to my knees, and I'm 5'5". No other crossings.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trail was in good condition - a few areas of minor mud that weren't too bad. There's no sign for the spur paths to the top and bottom of the falls - these should be added so that hikers don't blithely walk past them on the ski trail.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: As long as your dog is big enough to walk through the water at the beginning (or if you're willing to carry your dog), then they should be fine. No issues past the water crossing.
Bugs
Bugs: They were out, but the DEET I had applied in the morning was enough to keep most of them away.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Nothing.

Comments
Comments: This was another fun redline that I did because the water levels are low. Wading across the Ellis River was not a problem. From there, the trail goes through a brushy area before meeting up with the ski trail, which it follows for the rest of its length. The ski trail is a gradual climb and is easy to follow. However, there's no sign at the spur trail to the top of the falls, so it's easy to walk right past it going up the ski trail, and that is in fact what I did. I probably made it 0.4 past the falls before deciding that I must have gone too far. On the way back, I was able to find the spur paths to both the top and bottom of the falls. Neither of them are obvious, so it might not be a bad idea to bring a GPS so you know when you've hiked 0.9 miles (since that's where the falls are). Once I found them, the falls were very nice.

It's tough with trails like this - at times of high water, the falls would be more impressive, but the water crossing at the beginning would be more difficult. As it was today, I've seen more impressive waterfalls, but at least the crossing of Ellis River was easy and safe.
