Trails
Trails: Bushwhack, old skidder roads
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Friday, July 15, 2022
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: From Rt 3 in Pittsburg, drive Indian Stream Rd for a couple miles, then turn left onto Comstock Rd and follow for a couple of miles before turning left onto a spur rd shown on Gaia that heads up to a HOL between Shatney Northwest and Camp Brook. Indian Stream and Comstock Rd are in good shape and should be drivable with care by low clearance vehicles. Comstock Rd a little less so and it does become a little rougher as it goes on. I don’t recall much about the spur rd. Mid-clearance is probably best but low clearance may be okay. Make sure you don’t go up the new logging road not shown on Gaia that heads toward Camp Brook Peak. Room for park at the HOL.

Comments
Comments: Day 257, Peak 256. 4th hike and 5th peak of the day after the two Cowens, Metallak, and Camp Brook. Had planned on Abbott Brook and No Name Brook peaks as well but Comstock Rd is closed shortly before reaching the spur roads to each as they are working to fix some washout. Sounds like the road should be reopened in a couple weeks tops.

From the HOL on the road, I headed south, skirting the nearby knob. Still a bit of up and down but not bad. I found old skidder roads that rather nicely navigated me through this section. I took another bearing once on the other side of the of the knob stuck just south of the very minor col between the main peak and the knkb nearby the road, and began ascending at moderate grades to the peak. I slabbed up, just north of what looks to be some very steep stuff (possibly cliffy?) to the east of the peak but still keeping a straight enough line to be efficient. For once I felt like I hit it just right :) Not hard to find the register. I returned on essentially the same line, but just took one straight bearing back to my car as I realized I didn’t do as much zigging and zagging around that knob as I thought I would on my way in. Only differences were that I stuck a little closer to the steep stuff east of the peak on my way down (still no problem) and foolishly contoured too long around the knob near the road and ended up on the north side of it rather than descending toward my car sooner. Oh well, easy fix.

I thought this peak might be a PITA given that knob so close to the road but it was actually pretty pleasant. Good woods and only wet, mucky footing in the minor col I went just south of. Skidder roads helped too on my way in (I didn’t seem to find them again on my way out though I’m sure I was close to them). Mostly easy or moderate grades. I was pleased that I was able to avg about a 2mph ascent of this peak. The hike was just over 2mi with about 550ft of gain. It took me about 1hr20min to complete. 108 more days and 109 more peaks to go…
