 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
From Rt 3 in Pittsburg, drive Indian Stream Rd for a couple miles, then turn left onto Comstock Rd and follow for a couple of miles before turning left onto a spur rd shown on Gaia that heads up to a HOL between Shatney Northwest and Camp Brook. Indian Stream and Comstock Rd are in good shape and should be drivable with care by low clearance vehicles. Comstock Rd a little less so and it does become a little rougher as it goes on. The spur rd has a grassy center line and is probably best left for mid-clearance vehicles. 2WD should be fine. NOTE that once you reach the HOL there is now another road that heads NE to a point just south of the peak. This road is wide but rough. Mid-clearance recommemded. AWD would be very helpful but I (barely) managed to get my FWD up it. Room to park at the end of the road. NOTE that Comstock Rd just beyond the spur rd that follows Schoppe Brook is closed for maintenance thus limiting access to Abbott Brook and No Name Brook peaks. |

Day 257, Peak 255. 3rd hike and 4th peak of the day after the two Cowens, then Metallak Mtn. If you can make it up the rough logging road that heads NE from the HOL, it nearly takes you to the peak. Just one or two tenths of a mile from there. I whacked very steeply to the NW to attain the summit ridge which I then followed north for north for a few hundred feet to the register which is a little north of the highest contour shown on Gaia. I returned the same way. Open woods and though steep to attain the ridge, nothing scrambly. Didn’t even bring my pack on this one which is a first!! 0.4mi, just over 100ft of gain, and it took me a whopping 20min to get up and back and sign in :) 108 more days and 110 more peaks to go… |
