Quite a few folk headed up Huntington-hiked with a father and son for a while. Dad was from (I'm guessing based on his accent) either Croatia or Serbia and lived in Switzerland for a while where his son was born. He said compared to the Alps the Whites were far superior, ie much wilder. They're picking away at the 48's and currently live in Boston. On Wamsutta I didn't see a sole. Did see the old sauce pan at around 4200' and looked for a spring but couldn't find it--not a lot of water up higher. The lower section of Wamsutta was the most difficult, but long legs and a small brain were the ticket. Passed 3 hikers on Great Gulf (headed up), one with a fly rod who said he's caught some nice brookies in the past in that river. Passed 2 on the AT going in the opposite direction. No cooler full of beer (from the Pinkham crew) this year--I guess inflation put an end to that. Great day in the Whites. |
