Comments
Comments: My fifth try to get the abandoned Downes Brook slide trail correct bottom to top. All is well heading up the open slabs down low. Then you come to the junction of the old slide and the open slabs. Here the old slide was/is too steep to climb so the trail was in the woods to the right of the slide going up. I can find a blaze on a tree stream side but have not been able to find more for about .1 mile of just plain 'whacking through steep but otherwise easy woods. Once the herdpath is found again following it from there to the viewpoint is easy and the footing is good. Unrelenting steep for about a mile. Technically this is a bushwhack; the reality is, except for the short stretch mentioned above, this is a trail. A trail in much better condition than the other badly eroded trails on Passaconaway.
IMHO Square Ledge is a dud. Easy to see why it was dropped from 52WAV.
Thanks to Carole and Dave for another fun outing.
