Comments: A SAVAGE day was had in the forest! WOW! Bucket list hike! The word 'savage' was used in an 1870's as an adjective of this route, and its befitting of what we found today. I actually used a map from the 1870's to attempt to recreate this route, from the White Mountain Club, which is now known as the AMC. This was the original route to Carrigain before the railroads or signal ridge where constructed. Well, leave it to the land surveyor to figure it out! WE FOUND IT! A breathtaking climb was had. I will use the word climb because for a large portion of this we where free climbing wet, mossy granite boulders and ledge or easily 40d+ slopes. This is NOT something you want to attempt after a rain or a humid day. Each pitch required careful planning and route finding, again, on mossy wet slick rock. We reached the trigger point at approximately elevation 3250 (a report from 2009 claimed it was more or less bare to 3750, I have no idea how they did this as it was completely revegetated today.) From here we took a bearing due south and hit Signal Ridge Trail at about 4000 feet. After that, it was business as usual ascent of Carrigain. Totally wild jungle gym day. Attached is the NH Geological Report from 1868-1878 from which this idea was derived from. It starts on page 20. ("Mr. Vose's Report" (George L. Vose - a peak bearing his name is nearby)) This description from the 1870's is as true today as it was then. "To all the true lovers of mountains and of nature in her wildest moods, to those who relish a tramp through the woods and be dupon the ground, to all who wish to 'drink the wine of mountain air,' and to store their memory with splendid pictures that never fade away, we say-try Mount Carrigain!" (G.L.Vose)
