Date of Hike: Friday, July 15, 2022
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Paid for day parking at Highland Center because it looked pretty jam packed at Crawford Station and the roadsides at 10:30am on a beautiful Friday.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: So low it's almost not even a water crossing
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A prior trail report has a very detailed description of the several trees down past the Mt. Avalon spur as you're ascending. None of them are a serious impediment with off trail herd path repercussions. The biggest pain in the neck on the Willey Range Trail is the encroaching evergreen branches, almost the entire way between Field and Willey, with small more open breaks. I'm an average size woman, it would be much worse for a larger person.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Had my 2 and met several other energetic, friendly dogs and their friendly owners!
Bugs
Bugs: A few at the summit of Willey that my natural bug spray kept at bay.

Comments
Comments: Time to write a new White Mt. trail book with realistic trail descriptions. No more of this "sustained steep and rocky climb" or "stiff ascent" business. We need copious adjectives with expletives where needed - so for the Avalon Trail, "you're not climbing very much at first, which is never a good thing, because it always means you're going to hit something wicked, freaking steep to make up for it, and boy, do you ever. You hit a literal rock minefield that goes straight up, which some genius decided would be a good place to put the trail a couple hundred years ago. You eventually reach the top, after having paid the piper and the drummer and the guitarist, and then there's another section right after that, just as bad." That's what we need to read, cause that's what it is. And all the trails that I've ever hiked in the Whites have some sort of sh*t section like that which is just not fun. But still we do it, day after day, week after week, year after year.....it's the views, right?? The view from the Willey lookout is spectacular, one of the best. I had it to myself, which is good, because it's not very big. The view ledge is past the cairn, down around the corner, stay left.
