 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
I parked at a large turnaround shown on Gaia at the end of Wanosha Rd in Thornton just before a private residence\road. No signs prohibiting parking. The road becomes gravel but should be doable for any vehicle. |

Brown Ash Swamp Mountain (north/main and south peaks)
Day 253, Peak 249. 1st hike of the day.
From my car, I headed into the woods N/NE to avoid the residence (no posted land), then after a short ways took a bearing to the southern peak and headed NW. open woods the whole way but very steep grade as anticipated by the contour lines. Nothing cliffy/scrambly though. I hit the ridge a few hundred feet or so south of the true summit. Easy walking to the recognized highpoint. I signed in and continued along the ridge in open woods down to the col and up again to the main peak. You pass the NF boundary shortly after the south peak. Mostly easy-moderate grades. Walked over a locally highpoint or two to get to the true high point of the main peak. I signed in and returned to the col.
I got the bright idea to slab down from the col back to my car to save myself the 200ft of gain to south peak. Have I really gotten that lazy?! Turned out to sort of be more trouble than it was worth. I of course dropped down too low too soon and had a rather wavy line back to my car. Contouring was sort of a PITA too. Footing wasn’t great either. Doubt I saved any time. Should have just gone back over south peak. Oh well.
If doing this one again, I’d try going in from the end of Haselton Rd. Could make more of a loop from this point. Or, you could be a good doobie and avoid all potential for access issues and come in from FR23 or Johnson Brook Rd but those seemed like longer approaches to me. My hike was about 3mi with 900ft of gain, taking me 2.25hrs to complete. 112 more days and 116 more peaks to go… |
