 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
From Rt 3 in Pittsburgh, drive 3.25mi north along Indian Stream Rd, then turn right onto a road Gaia shows as continuing up to the peak. You can drive the road for 1/2mi before there’s a gate. Here, I parked and continued on foot. Indian Stream Rd should be doable for all cars. This other road that heads toward the peak for 1/2mi before a gate (many of this roads/ATV Trails are named…this may have been Shatney Mtn Trail) is rougher. I managed with FWD though AWD would be helpful. Mid-clearance needed. |

Probably not the best idea with all the ATVs on the road. |

Other than on the summit I don’t think they were too bad. |

Day 252, Peak 248. 4th hike/3rd peak of the day after Dube Brook (Mon 496+497), a little walk down Indian Stream Canyon, and Monument 493 Peak (Greeley Brook Peak).
I walked the ATV trail for 1mi to a fork in the road, then took the left fork which headed north toward the peak I wanted. I jumped off near the HOL on the road. The ATV Trail was flat at times and steeper at others but in all only gained 400-500ft over the mile. Very short whack through open woods at east-moderate grades (if you do it right) from the HOL on the road. Easy to find register. I returned the same way.
About 2.5mi with around 550ft of gain and it took me 1hr to complete. 113 more days and 117 more peaks to go… |
