 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
From Pittsburgh: Back Lake Rd (fine for all vehicles) —> Moose Pond Rd (a bit rougher; mid-clearance may not be necessary but I felt better in it) —> Indian Stream Rd (in good shape; should be okay for low clearance with caution) —> Rd that goes by Pearley Terrill Dam —> Left, then left again to road east of the peak. Mid-clearance and 2WD will easily get there. Low clearance might struggle. I parked at the shortest distance from the peak (about 0.8mi) at 1850-1875ft at a grassy spot (start of old skidder road) where I was able to pull off). |

Day 250, Peak 243. 2nd peak of the day after Telrestoe Brook/Deer Mtn- West. Had planned on Dube Brook and Monument 493/Greeley Brook after this but it began to downpour.
From my car, I went up the grassy incline I found myself on that turned into a very overgrown skidder road. Reminiscent of Trestle Brook already…oh goody. I jumped off the skidder road before long as it probably would’ve taken me into an open area seen on Gaia that was due west of where I parked. So I travelled SW, then south to skirt around it, passing by a brook that had a beautiful moss carpeted slab along the way. Grades were flat or very gentle and the woods pretty open and not brushy until I hit the base of some steeper stuff around 2050ft. Here I turned more NW and ascended moderately up toward the peak. Though Gaia showed me as going between two open areas, I went through one brushy area shortly before reaching the the summit ridge. Once I hit the summit ridge I headed south as that ground seemed higher to me. No register. I checked Gaia and sure enough I headed the wrong way. The true summit and register really is at the very northern end of the highest contour shown on Gaia. Bit of a herd path forming along the ridge. Not hard to find the register. I signed in and returned roughly the same way.
This peak was another typical 2000 footer in Pittsburgh though not as wet, overgrown, and unpleasant as Trestle Brook/West Deer. On this one, I just hit that one very overgrown Skidder road at my start and another brushy area just before the summit ridge. Only one or two wet spots along the way. My hike was about 2.25mi with 350ft of gain, taking me 1.5hrs. 115 more days and 122 more peaks to go… |
