This hike has been on my radar for a few years. I was reluctant to do this because it is considered a bushwack and I usually hike solo. Not being the brightest of people I decided to do this hike anyway even though I did it solo. Hike starts very mellow up to the small cairn to the right about 0.25 miles along FR 304A. You then enter an area of rapidly growing young trees. It is very tight here. The path then enters an area of older growth and widens. Here the path is very discernible probably due to the rain the previous night. At this point the path starts to go up in earnest(earlier trail reports do not mention the rapid elevation gain). This rapid gain continues to about 3600 feet. Reminded me of the Mt Tremont Trail and the Sugarloaf(Groveton) Trail. It's up up up. At about 3100 feet there is good outlook to the left(Middle and North Sugarloaf, Mt Hale). There is also a restricted view at about 3600 feet(the Nubble?) to the left. There is a good view of Peak Above the Nubble from here. From 3600 feet to the Summit the grade lessens but the blowdown areas start. There are 2 main ones with very faded paths to go around. No problem when going up but the path is hard to spot on the way down.I got turned around on the second one coming down and spent 15 minutes doing a real bushwack to get back to the path. Veer to the right not the left as I did. As you approach the Summit the path levels off. Two signs at the Summit(3813 with canister and Nubble 3813). There is an outlook path to the left with an incredible views. There is even a bench like rock to enjoy the 180 degree views. I do not stay at summits very long but the views were so good I stayed up there almost an hour. I was very reluctant to leave.(Views of the Presidentials,Mt Hale, Mt Carrigain, Mt Guyot, South Twin slide, etc). Outside of my unexpected real bushwack, coming down was uneventful but due to the grade I slipped a few times on the wet soil. I saw nobody on the path the whole trip.Very serene and beautiful hike. Would do this hike again but not solo. Was a little apprehensive during my real bushwack excursion. |
