Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parked at the designated lot off Haystack Rd. This is a good dirt road passable by any vehicle. It is gated in winter. No fee, no privy. Kiosk. Lot can hold 10 vehicles with roadside parking available before the bridge. Full lot today.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: We avoided the first two large crossings of Little River (which is larger than its moniker) using the established herd path. The remaining large crossing was accomplished using large rocks and trekking poles. Feet stayed dry. This was faster moving water, but not as deep as I’ve seen on prior trips. There are two more crossings of tributaries to Little River which were no issue at all.

Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Our dog did just fine (65 LBS, pit bull mix breed). He loved the river… I packed half a liter of extra water for him which came in handy at the summit. There is plenty of water up to 4000 feet. Then it is dry. But this is a sheltered route offering a plentitude of shade for rest stops.
Bugs
Bugs: Biting black flies in lower elevations in the afternoon. Some black flies at the summit, but not as bad as they were last week.

Comments
Comments: Nice out and back on the North Twin trail. I only needed North Twin for my July grid so I was not motivated to continue to South Twin for the additional views.

North Twin trial is well maintained, well blazed in yellow. Simple to follow footpath. Footbed is nice and comfortable in lower elevations. As elevations increase the footbed morphs into straight rocks with few dirt paths in between. It gets a bit knarly towards the summit (ledges, boulders, high steps) but nothing treacherous or scary. The hiker is climbing to 4700 feet so it gets very steep after the final water crossing. Again, no exposed stuff. Just straight up steep.

The herd path is simply a more narrow trail. It is simple to follow.

Several people out enjoying the mild July weather.
