| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
One major birch duckunder blowdown that needs a chain saw. There was a lot of water in the trails after heavy rains last night. We met the trail maintainer, Brewster, whose lower half was covered in mud after putting in quite a few new water drains and cleaning others. It's very hard work, it's never ending, he drove a long ways to do it, and yet he was in good spirits and fun to chat with. Kudos to him and the other maintainers I know and don't know. |

| Dog-Related Notes: |
Easy day for the mighty tough little dog. No sun, no heat, plenty of water, and nothing hard. We met one group with four dogs who were enjoying themselves. |

| Comments: |
After moving today's hike to tomorrow, we chose this one knowing we would be sheltered from the high winds that were forecast. The highest gust I got on S. Kinsman was 12, hardly a problem, and over on Bald Peak later I got a 20 for a gust. A few sprinkles on the hike, with a shower on the drive home. Colors are past peak in the notch but the understory beech are still pretty near the road. There's nice colors still going further south on 93. There weren't many on the trails today in sharp contrast with the Osceolas last Sunday. We met one gang of Boreal Chicadees in full chatter. Which reminds me, Sierra, I hope you got your 48th last Monday. |
