Peaks
Peaks Mt. Chocorua, Middle Sister, NH
Trails
Trails: Carter Ledge Trail, Middle Sister Trail, West Side Trail, Champney Falls Cutoff
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, June 26, 2022
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parked at White Ledge Campground. At the picnic parking area (with signs designating hiker parking), there is room for 6 cars, with 1-2 handicap spots. I couldn't figure out exactly what the handicap sign was designating, so I avoided that side of the parking area. I was the 4th car in at 8:30, and upon my return at 2:30, 3 cars remained.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Only crossing of note was on the descent on Middle Sister Trail. Very easy rock hopping
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There were a few small blowdowns on the quieter West Side Trail and Champney Falls Cutoff. Only one was somewhat difficult to pass, about halfway on West Side Trail. Required an awkward crab walk squat for me, would likely be less fun if you're taller.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes:
Bugs
Bugs: Seemingly a lot of flies, but they were not particularly bothersome.

Comments
Comments: Route: up Carter Ledge, to Chocorua on Middle Sister Trail. Hopped on Piper to get there, obviously, then Liberty to get to West Side Trail. Went down Champney Falls Trail just to check out the Champney Falls Cutoff, then took the cutoff back onto Middle Sister Trail for the descent. Clocked in at 10.9 miles over 6 hours exactly. The last few miles on Middle Sister were fast for me, and I was grateful for some soft surfaces. Saw two other people on Carter Ledge, and absolutely no one on my Middle Sister Trail descent. If you're looking for a quieter way up Chocorua, I recommend!

It was an incredibly dry and hot day. Even down low, it was very warm, and the breeze at the summit did little to cool me off. Bleh. Trying to stay in "mountain shape" as I prepare to hike Katahdin next month, so the scramble-y sections of Carter Ledge were a good warm up for Knife's Edge. Chocorua was one of my first hikes in NH, just about 5 years ago. It was really rewarding to return with my new knowledge of the Whites, to stand up there on the summit and know the names of the peaks around me.
