 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
As mentioned by the Teal Goat, The Subway desperately needs some fresh blazes. after 5 minutes they just disappeared. Trail sense only gets you so far when you’re standing amongst glacial erratics the size of houses. “Someone could easily get lost here”. Yup, that was me. I bushwhacked through over 50% of the Subway, and would strongly advise against doing so. Almost took a 20+ foot fall into a very deep Boulder chasm that might have been the end of ol’ Spence. Fun times. Shout out to Teal Goat for mentally preparing me to get lost today:) |

 | Dog-Related Notes: |
If you take a dog into the Subway, you’re gonna have a bad time. Same with Great Gully. Your dog will have an even worse time. |
|
 | Bugs: |
Annoying at summit but fine elsewhere |
|
 | Lost and Found: |
Bottom half of trekking pole sitting on top of largest Boulder in the Subway. Was sporting the running vest today so no room to pack out. Looked pretty recently lost |

Early redlining to beat the heat. Amphibrach was very pleasant. The Subway was really fun for five minutes then I got super lost, initiated bushwhack mode, and almost killed myself by taking a bad step that resulted in blindly falling about 3 feet down to a soft landing, inches away from a sharp tree root and a 20+ foot deep Boulder chasm that would have wrecked or killed me. I should have kept retracing steps but after a few failed attempts to find trail I just said F it and bushwhacked-bad idea but I made it through and popped out about 50 feet from the intersection. Took a quick spin up the ice caves, then hit the Great Gully. Great Gully was as advertised-super steep and rough with one interesting/tight scramble . Only two tricky spots to stay on trail were at the stream crossings. Had summit to myself at 7am then ran most of the route down once I passed Crag Camp. needed the long section of rail trail between Appalachia and Castle TH so I zigzagged a bit down low so I could finish with a not-so-fun jog. Saw 7 people all morning. Hit 90% on trails today-13 hikes to go:) |
