For this bushwhack, I ascended Mt. Osceola via a narrow (15-foot wide) slide on the north side of Split Cliff. This slide is generally hard to spot from the Hancock overlook in summer, though it is always visible in clear weather in the winter months, at least after the snow builds.
Starting from a pull-off on the Kanc, I ascended for 1.5 miles through a mixed forest, which was never too thick. At 3,000 ft., I hit the base of the slide; looking up, I could see that the gully was filled with toppled trees as far as the eye could see. For the next two hours, I ascended over this complete mess of boulders and dead trees, with about 1,000 ft. of elevation gain over 0.3 miles. This would make for an excellent crampon/ice axe ascent during a good winter, but for the reasons I described, I really cannot recommend this route for the non-winter months. After reaching the top of the slide, I headed over to the top of Split Cliff, where I visited a number of excellent view ledges. I was surprised to find the woods near the top of the cliff to be fairly open, though the fir scrub was dense when I descended to the ledges.
From the cliff, it was a straightforward bushwhack over to the Mt. Osceola Trail, which I took to the summit and then used for the descent. Overall, an excellent day on Osceola. |
