Comments: Today’s trip checked a couple boxes, and was very productive. We were tasked by the RMC with cleaning up the Four Soldiers Trail, which is so lightly used.

First off, the Pond of Safety road is in pretty decent shape. It does have a few icebergs sticking out of the road, and the final hill to the parking area has some deep water bars going on. We managed fine in both directions (7-8” clearance vehicle), just taking our time and not letting the car bounce much was key.

Four Soldiers trail needed some serious brushing just to see the sign, let alone get started hiking! Plenty of blowdowns to go around, but we managed to get the majority of them on this side of the trail. Mt Crescent Trail heading north to Randolph Mtn and North Randolph was all good, adding in a short whack to the high point of North Randolph. The pencil is missing from the jar, and unfortunately we didn’t have anything to replace it with. Underhill Trail is definitely in need of some love. One section about halfway along the grass gets high and you think you’ve lost the trail. Descending it is easy enough to spot the big bridge ahead, but climbing up it will be a little more challenging. Another work trip for another day! Lots of moose activity on the entire loop!

Once we returned to the car (the final half mile was a breeze!), we dropped our packs off and took a stroll down to the pond. We watched a cow and her calf cooling off across the pond! Thankfully we were down wind, so they were never bothered with us. Lucky day!
