Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks North Weeks, Middle Weeks, South Weeks, NH
Trails
Trails: York Pond Trail, Kilkenny Ridge Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Friday, June 10, 2022
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parking for several cars at the trailhead and if not enough there is more parking just a bit down the road at another trailhead (I believe for Unknown Pond Trail). Two other cars there when I arrived about 9:30 and one when I left about 5:00. The guy at the Fish Hatchery said the gate would be open until about 10:00 which is what they’ve said every time I hike from this area.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Significant
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Two water crossings on York Pond Trail which you can rock hop but rocks are slippery and wet
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Significant mud on first mile of York Pond Trail where there are some boardwalks, however, many are rotted and not fully nailed down. Not realizing this, I stepped on an end that was nailed down but the opposite end wasn’t and my foot sunk into the mud when the board “see sawed.” (This was a little less than a mile in.)
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Easy route for dogs although I didn’t see any
Bugs
Bugs: Black flies were bad in the parking lot and less so on the trail. Permethrin and Deep Woods Off always save me from getting more than just a couple bites. There is some tall grass at the start of the York Pond Trail which always makes me think about ticks and I didn’t come home with any.

Comments
Comments: The first mile of York Pond Trail was very muddy and wet then the trail dried out as it began to ascend a little more steeply. Kilkenny Ridge Trail was relatively dry to North Weeks and footing was easy. From North Weeks to South Weeks the trail was much less traveled (other than by moose) and footing was rougher, muddier and wetter with more roots and rocks than up to North Weeks. Entire route is wooded although not densely so I wasn’t as protected from the rain as on more densely wooded peaks. It only rained a few minutes at the top of each peak. There were no summit signs that I saw. There’s a small clearing at the top of North Weeks and only a small cairn at the summit of South Weeks off a spur trail to the right while Kilkenny Ridge Trail goes left. Bottom line- you could easily blow by all three peaks if not paying attention!
