Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: No problem. One easy step-over and one nice wooden bridge.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trail is in excellent condition. Some additional blazes or cairns would be helpful, especially on the upper sections. The summit of Middle Moat is off the trail, according to the AMC White Mountain Guide. However, there was no obvious spur trail that I could see. It looks like people have made their own trails to the summit, sometimes trampling the alpine vegetation.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes:
Bugs
Bugs: Some mosquitoes in the parking lot and black flies higher up. I covered up and applied DEET, no problems.

Comments
Comments: It had rained overnight, and the ledges going up to South Moat were slippery. There's something about the particular type of rock that it's very slippery when wet, more than it looks. Fortunately, the ledges are not too steep, and it is possible to find good footing if you pay attention. But you do need to pay attention. I was a little concerned about descending, but most of the rocks dried out during the day so it wasn't bad.
This is a beautiful hike. The extensive open ledges provide great views and a real alpine character, despite the modest elevation.
