Comments
Comments: The trail has re-opened after the fire. The fire burned up the trail, starting at the sharp right turn by the ledge with limited south views approximately 1 mile from the parking lot. The burned area continues for approximately 0.3 to 0.4 miles, ending after the climb to the first ridge, where there are ledges with another south view. Interestingly, the trail footbed is obvious as it appears not to have burned, but the understory adjacent to the trail has all burned. Much of this section is a series of rock steps as the trail climbs fairly steeply here. I would strongly encourage hikers to stay on the rock steps at all times in order to avoid erosion/further damage of the burned areas just off the trail (i.e, treat this like an alpine zone). Most of the fire damage to the trees appears limited to the lower several feet of the trees and the crowns of most trees were leafed out, and many of the blazes on the trail survived, but how the trees might fare in high winds is unknown. At present, the Forest Service does have notes on trees at the start and end of the burned area, too.
