Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Parapet brook from Mad gulf was raging. Hammer crossed on a fallen tree, I forded carefully. We both forded Chandler Brook. We wanted to get to the scree field on Buttress trail, but could not safely ford the west branch of the Peabody river at the junction for wamsutta and six husbands. Absolutely roaring right now

Comments
Comments: We wanted to see what great gulf was like after all the warm weather. We were just going to see what it was like and make decisions along the way. We encountered intermittent ice and snow somewhere between the mad gulf junction and chandler brook trail. More consistent, unconsolidated snow after chandler brook trail. Fine without spikes because snow was so soft. Some icy parts to be careful on though. Once we realized we couldn’t cross the Peabody at six husbands and get to the scree field on Buttress, we decided to head up Wamsutta and turn around if it was bad. Well, on the steeps, there were small sections of shallow snow and ice, but nothing too bad, so we went for it. we put on trail crampons and made it up, but it was nerve racking. we thought the hard part was over. Well, after the steeps there is still 1000 feet of climbing, and this is where the unconsolidated, deeper snow started. There were some stretches of dry or just wet trail, but many long stretches of postholing up to mid thigh. Trail needs a few more weeks before it will be worth doing. Once at the auto road, some very nice people from NYC drove us down. What a day.
