Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Bear Mountain (Hebron), NH
Trails
Trails: Alexandria-Hebron Turnpike, Bear Mountain Trail, Elwell Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Thursday, May 12, 2022
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: As I usually do, I parked in the log landing on the turnpike, 0.3 mi. from Bear Mountain Rd. High clearance can get to the junction 0.3 mi. further near the start of Bear Mountain Trail. Getting to the log landing is fine for any vehicle with careful driving; rougher after that.

Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Considering these trails are somewhat more primitive and lightly used, everything was in pretty good shape. Some blazes on Elwell west of Bear could use touching up. I cut out one blowdown on Bear Mountain Trail and five on Elwell. I left others in place which were either too big for my saw or were easy stepovers.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes:
Bugs
Bugs: The unofficial state birds were very plentiful and very hungry today due to the warm temps and lack of wind. I also picked up seven ticks.

Comments
Comments: Even though the bugs were horrendous, I put up with the little darlings because I really enjoy this area. Everything is bone dry at the moment, which is a bit concerning given the high fire danger.

I had originally planned on going only to Bear, but kept walking west along Elwell until I got to the power lines, where I turned back. Fantastic views from the power line cut. Back on Bear, I descended on Elwell which is only slightly less steep than Bear Mountain Trail.

Definitely summer out there today with temps in the 80s.
