Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parked at the small dirt surfaced lot just off North Rd in Shelburne, NH. I did not want to try my luck down Hogan rd (though it was totally passable today). I did NOT see the trail closure signs for Centennial trial. See comments below.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Snow/Ice - Small Patches

Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Is it possible to blaze the AT between the junction with Centennial Trail and Cascade Mtn? There was super helpful orange flagging tape along this section but no standard white blazes. Why? This trail was hard to see through this section this time of year. On the AT from Cascade Mtn to Trident Pass the blazes are VERY faded. Numerous new blow downs throughout the trails. I moved what I could. Peabody Brook is ready for some brushing. The spruce and hobble bush are really encroaching on the trail.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Dog did just fine on all trails. Dry trail on Centennial, pack water if it opens anytime soon.
Bugs
Bugs: Oh they are awake, and I foolishly wore black. Black flies most predominant below 1800 feet.

Comments
Comments: *** TRAIL CLOSURE *** Centennial Trail (AT) is closed due to fire at present.

Route:
Centennial Trail > Mahoosuc Trail > Peabody Brook Trail > road walk on North rd back to parking.

Centennial Trail: this is the AT and is blazed in updated white blazes. I may be the winner of “Today’s Most Stupid Hiker” award. I had no idea about the fire or the trail closure. Once I encountered the scorched understory I DID rethink my hiking plan. But there were no active flames and only some smoky tendrils oozing their way out of the ground this early morning. I did not perceive a threat and decided to push on. But officially, the trail is closed at present. There was no water on this trail either. I kept the dog close to me through the burned sections.

Mahoosuc Trail: this is also the AT but is not blazed in traditional standards. The section between the junction with Centennial Trail and Cascade Mtn has NO blazes save for a few on the ledges ascending Cascade Mtn. There is, however, orange flagging tape marking the way (many thanks!!!). From Trident Col to Wocket Ledge there are white blazes, but man do they need updating. I can’t recall the blazing between Trident Col and the junction with Peabody Trail. It must have been adequate. The footbed was fairly easy to discern for the most part. Leaf litter and thick blow downs obscured some sections. There were a few shallow patches of snow at 2800 feet, but luckily nothing to cause postholes. These should be gone in a day or two anyway. Some mud as always on the Mahoosuc. Plenty of water points. Page Pond lovely.

Peabody Trail: this is blazed in blue, but not until you descend and cross the Peabody Brook. The only major water crossing was simple with rocks. The footbed was simple to discern. The ladder is in excellent shape. No rope available for the small rock slide just past the ladder. The dog and I did fine on all fours. Lovely trail to descend back to North Rd. Note there is a sign that dogs must be leashed “per town law.” I did this anyway as there are many residences on this road.
