 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
If driving up from the North Conway side, just before reaching the parking area for Black Cap look for an old road obscured by blowdowns and blue blaze on the left (north) side of the road. Roughly opposite this there was a pullout for a car or two. I parked there, crossed the road, and began my hike! |

 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
The trail is blazed in red higher up; the blazing is faded. There’s blue blaze as well but this marks the state forest boundary. There were some blowdowns along the summit ridge which obscured the trail. Not easy to follow around the summit as the blowdowns have obscured the trail and it doesn’t seem to receive much maintenance. |

Day 187, Peak 180. 2nd hike and peak of the day after Table Mtn. Nice and warm afternoon hike, just the way we like ‘em ;)
If driving up from the North Conway side, just before reaching the HOL and the parking for Black Cap, look on the left (north) side of the road for a road obscured by blowdowns and some blue blaze marking the state forest boundary. Walk N, then NW at east-moderate grades along this road for 0.2mi or so. Then, as the road seems to become more obscure, then right onto a footpath marked by a small cairn and ascend more steeply up the SW ridge of the mountain. The trail is lightly trodden but followable if you have experience. Shortly before reaching the summit ridge, you’ll pass an old mine. There’s some more around too but they appeared to be off trail. Once you’re on the summit ridge shortly thereafter, the trail became much harder to follow. It appeared to be marked with faded red blazes but it flirted with hardwoods again and had been obscured by blowdowns so hard to stay on it. In particular, there’s a tricky turn (more so descending I think) from the SW ridge to the summit ridge. Hopefully you’re only doing this peak if you’re a bushwhacker though, so no matter ????
The highpoint was easy to spot but no register. I returned roughly the same way but not getting this turn right and instead briefly bushwhacking and passing some more mining sites. The hike was between 1-1.25mi with just under 400ft of gain, taking me 30min to complete. 178 more days and 185 more peaks to go… |
