Date of Hike: Sunday, May 8, 2022
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Love that large parking lot! There were maybe 5 or 6 cars in the lot when I started at 9:45am this Sunday morning, and 2 there when I finished.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Ice - Breakable Crust, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Stable), Mud - Significant, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Unstable), Snow - Spring Snow, Snow/Ice - Postholes, Slush, Snow/Ice - Small Patches
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Water crossings were minor today. The very first crossing after the legit bridge is a two plank affair, and one of the planks is really sagging. It feels ready to go at any point.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There are a few blowdowns but nothing major. The section between Crawford and the Parker Trail is experiencing drainage issues in spots, with one section a muddy bog.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: No dogs today!
Bugs
Bugs: No bugs today either (thankfully).
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: N/A

Comments
Comments: I read a trail report from 5/7 that described the snow conditions after Crawford and I found that report to be spot on: there is negligible snow up to the Crawford spur, then pockets of monorail and melting mashed potato snow drifts to both Resolution and Stairs. The previous commenter said the problem is the snow is too deep in spots for spikes and the snow too inconsistent for snowshoes. I agree with this assessment. Ultimately I bare booted it to Resolution, then put on my spikes when going out to Stairs. I was glad for the added traction as that section of the trail is steep in spots and the snow was pretty deep near the top of Stairs. I overshot the turn coming down off Stairs and found myself in an inadvertent posthole minefield until I realized my mistake 1/10 of a mile down trail. There were pretty large moose tracks in the snow near the summit of Stairs. All in all, a good hike.
