| Comments: |
Tuck trail was still surprisingly solid ice from about 2700' up.
LH dihedral was ice-free, just wet rock.
Ice flow above the dihedral was wet ice, often quite hard, for about 300'.
We were glad of crampons, and used the pick of the ice axe a lot, to provide a third point of contact before moving a boot.
In some spots, used axe in one hand and tree root in the other for four points.
Above the winter/summer junction, plain sailing.
Beware, though, on the summit cone, many skiers ignore trails and create boot tracks in random places that dead end at a good point to aim skis downhill.
Better to follow the defined trail by cairns or GPS.
At the summit, it was suggested to us to try coming down skiers uptrack in Tuckerman's ravine.
We took a look, but those on it were front-pointing down, facing in, with all the exposure of TR behind them. Doable, but no margin for error.
We went back down LH.
A day to remember!
