Comments
Comments: We spotted a car at the southern terminus of the Moat Mountain trail and started hiking from the northern terminus of the trail.
Heading south we encountered snow and ice on the trail at approximately 2,600 feet. We encountered two hikers who had turned around before they reached the summit of North Moat Mountain because they didn’t bring any traction devices and didn’t want to risk falling. We put on light traction devices shortly after meeting them which was helpful. However the rocky summit was clear of all ice and snow. We didn’t need any traction going south from the summit or for the rest of the hike.
As we were heading down off the summit of North Moat Mountain a yellow helicopter was circling the area. Amazingly it landed on North Moat Mountain and we could see the door open up but no one got out. It stayed there for a while and then appeared to have perhaps landed on the summit of Middle or South Moat Mountain. It finally disappeared. The noise caused Piper to get anxious. I’m not sure why the helicopter was there as it didn’t appear to be involved in any type of rescue. Perhaps it was just practicing landing.
The rest of the hike was uneventful. We had some views but overcast skies obscured the Presidential peaks.
Thanks to Deb and Suzette for joining us.
