The report by Robert Corsi still holds true. The ice surfaces begin just before the sign for the forest protection area around the summit tower. There are some short stretches of bare ground after the sign and the ledges leading up to the summit are bare. Highly recommend microspikes or other traction with sharp spikes. The spikes dug in to the softening ice surface well. Bare booting the sloped icy path would be difficult using protruding rocks and roots as well as side paths off the official trail (causes trail expansion). The ledges in the middle section of the trail were a mix of wet and dry surfaces today. No ice on these ledges.
Limited views due to a low cloud ceiling in the NH White Mountains. Could see Baldface, Royces, and the faraway profile of Old Speck (less overcast to the northeast).
Good to meet Russ and his dog again (last time on Pleasant Mtn ME). |
