Spring conditions. A bit of everything. We bare-booted, we used microspikes, we used crampons. I think I counted 6 footwear changes, but might have been more.
The dihedral on LH shortly after leaving fire road was melted out, just a wet rock climb.
Above that through the end of the trees was steep, soft, wet ice.
Above that to the summit, mashed potatoes.
Learned the hard way not to follow skiers bootprints. They might look like they are going to the summit, but many of them just go up a few hundred feet and then leave a ski trail down. Better to just follow the GPS dot on the real trail, kick in steps, and ignore the temptations of somebody else's steps that go nowhere.
We investigated downclimbing the skiers uptrack in Tuckerman's right gully. Not recommended, at least on this day. LHwinter is always a challenge, but downclimbing 500 ft facing in on TRG with no rope and lots of exposure didn't appeal.
