Taking a trip up Plymouth Mtn has been in the back of my mind for a while, but since it's not on any goal-oriented list of mine, it hasn't been a priority, however this mountain checked all the boxes (partner, time frame, distance, conditions) for yesterday's adventure. Got an early start, 7:30am with hat & gloves and carried spikes, because you never know, until you know...you know? The trail is well marked with yellow wooden blazes, and faint blue ones. The trail, not too steep, not too flat...just right, climbs thru open woods and some shaded zones of conifers. the footbed is soft until the junction to Pike's Peak. From the sign to the outlook were you can peek at the peaks of Franconia ridge, and even see Washington, the trail narrows and hardens over rock ledge. My partner opted to hang at the outlook while I made the trip to the actual summit. This part of the trail is mostly over ledge and boulders, no scrambling. slippery when wet. In addition to the yellow wooden blazes, there are some yellow circular tags and cairns to follow over to the summit which was no problem finding. didn't see an 'outlook' sign as mentioned in the Southern NH trail guide, but there is a "summit" sign pointing the way and then an actual named summit sign. Descending...I did make the mistake of just following the cairns. I went right/straight where the trail bends left following the cairns for a bit on a lesser worn path, until I got that feeling of 'this ain't right'. so maybe, some yellow blazes painted on the rocks for the real trail will be helpful? anyway, it only added 5 minutes to my planned 30 minute O&B, not enough of a delay to have my partner come looking for me. We had the whole place to ourselves until about halfway down. back to car by 11:30. |
