Beautiful bluebird day for this peak. It’s a rare experience to have such blue skies and minimal wind for this summit. Mt Wash and it’s fellow snow capped ridges were magnificent. Trail conditions up to upper junction for the falls were dry with very little mud. Just after this point the monorail started and we put on our spikes and kept them on until the ledges on the Cutoff trail. After going back into the woods we put on our spikes again until the junction with Middle Sister Trail. From here it’s dry to the summit. Headed back down with spikes on from MST to upper falls junction. Heading down to the falls the trail was 99% ice free. One shaded spot at the top of the stairs has a large icy patch, beware as you are descending this section. The Falls were lovely as usual. As we were about to head back to the main trail we heard a large thud- it was a good size chunk of ice falling from Pitcher Falls. The couple and their dog in that area were extremely lucky they weren’t in it’s path. I’m sure conditions will change as it warms up but be prepared for traction in the shaded areas. They still have a significant amount of melting to go. |
