There was pretty much every condition possible on the trail today. The area from about 3/4 of a mile to the hut was very treacherous. The trail is very steep there and it had gotten extremely slushy. Nearly turned around as I knew it would get worse as the sun warned it further. I was slipping and sliding as were many others. You could actually see slide marks going off of the trail and starting down into the steep pitch to the side. I switched to full crampons and was definitely doing better with those as I was able to really kick into it. Slow going. The trail from the hut up to the Madison summit was just fine. I kept some spikes on but it could’ve easily been bear booted. Lots of mud on the trail lower down and I think I switched over to spikes at about 2000 feet of elevation. |
