Comments
Comments: Within 4/10ths from the trailhead hard flat ice started in the morning. This evolved to crusty packed snow from about 3/4 mile from the trailhead and stayed that way. There are some areas of running water across the trail. We went clockwise. The north loop had some ice but it was coated with snow and had nice grip with good spikes. The ridge has a ton of snow a couple feet deep but firm in the morning. There were some older post holes here and there. South loop had no ice, just packed snow with lots of decent foot holds. Sharp spikes were all that was needed. I carried full crampons but didn’t use them. By the early afternoon the packed crunchy snow on the first couple of miles of trail turned mushy but didn’t ball the spikes. There will be warmer temps the next couple of days so expect softer snow and maybe carry snowshoes for the ridge.
