Date of Hike: Sunday, September 25, 2011
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Plenty of room in the winter lot. The washout on Sawyer River Rd is impressive.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All rock hoppable - a few are much wider after the hurricane.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: As previously mentioned, one small section on the first section of Signal Ridge where the trail is washed out, and a herd path is established on the uphill side - two similar places on Carrigain Notch Trail as well. Removed a few smaller blowdowns, still about half a dozen left, including an annoying large one with many branches in the trail on Carrigain Notch shortly before the junction with Desolation Trail.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Hannah had a good day - plenty of water on all the lower elevation trails, and scattered puddles up and down Carrigain. She needed a small boost on one steep section of Desolation Trail, but other than that she was ahead of me the whole time, as usual.
Bugs
Bugs: A few annoying little things in the swampy area near the junction with Nancy Pond Trail, boo.

Comments
Comments: I've been wanting to hike Carrigain by the longer loop for a while and fortunately had a spectacular day for it. Felt like a mid-summer day with the temps but blue skies pretty much the whole way - higher summits were all in the clear when we got to the summit. Carrigain Notch Trail is absolutely beautiful, especially beyond the height of land - easy footing, beautiful foliage, and solitude! - didn't see a soul until I hit the summit. As advertised, Desolation Trail was wicked steep, but definitely a good challenge on a new trail. What a perfect day for the first hike of the fall!
