 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
We parked at the nice new lot. Room for a dozen or so cars before it would begin to overflow. Roads in were in good shape. |
|
 | Surface Conditions: |
Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant |
|
 | Recommended Equipment: |
|
|
 | Water Crossing Notes: |
We finally crossed the drainage we’d been following down from Black Hill when we got on Mt Kineo Trail. |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
I think the trail(s) may have been blazed in yellow? No blowdowns that I’m recalling. Not hard to follow in these sections. |
|
 | Dog-Related Notes: |
Sure but we went up some steeper stuff on our ascent that involved a bit of scrambling. |
|
 | Bugs: |
None |
|
 | Lost and Found: |
Yup. My glasses case, with my glasses, fell out of my pocket. It’s very likely that it’s somewhere between the 1850ft bump south of the peak and the summit. It’s also very likely that no one finds it. And only slightly more likely than someone finding my lost car keys on Henry Hill ???? What will I lose next… |

Day 168, Peak 159. 2nd hike of the day after Downing and Eagle Cliff West. By this point in the day, other than our start, the little snow flurries/squalls were over and we actually enjoyed a bit of sunshine between wind gusts.
We hiked in maybe 1/3mi along Three Pond Trail, then started whacking north through the hardwoods. When we hit the base of some cliffs, we then headed more NW to a very minor col between this 1850ft bump south of the peak and a minor HOL to the north. We continued NW over this minor HOL along a little ridge, then contoured a bit in a sag SW of the peak, before turning right (NE) and heading steeply up to the summit in some more mixed woods. Not hard to find the jar which my friend I was hiking with had hung a couple years back :)
We headed SW back toward the minor sag, avoiding some of the steeper stuff we came up by staying a little further west, walked through the sag, headed east, then followed a winding drainage (generally eastward) to Mt Kineo Trail about 2/3mi from the parking area. I believe my friend said that this is the route most people follow (as an out-and-back) to bag the summit. I see why. The drainage was surprisingly nice walking. We even passed one little scenic cascade :)
No snow other than what had just fallen an was quick was melting and was just a dusting in some spots. The hike was about 3.25mi with 900ft of gain, taking us 1hr45min with some time spent searching for my glasses case ???? 197 more days and 206 more peaks to go… |
