| Comments: |
Conditions will likely vary on a daily basis, based on warming and freezing. We had lots of mashed potato like snow/ice on Saturday on the upper half, while the lower half was a mostly a frozen, low monorail with subsections of mud/leaves. We took the Pine Bend Brook Trail up to North Tripyramid and Middle Tripyramid and then returned the same way. The section of Pine Bend Brook Trail shortly before you hit the Scaur Ridge Trail was perhaps the most challenging, as there were a couple of sections with blue ice which formed mini-luges, but navigatable by holding on to trees and other objects. Fortunately there was very little exposure during the entire trail, so we felt safe throughout (some earlier reports mentioned the need for ice crampons which had us worried about exposed sections). We used spikes nearly the entire way and never felt the need to switch over to our ice crampons. Definitely don't need snow shoes, but definitely needed traction with more bite than just microspikes. I did get my "bells rung" when I got clonked on the head by falling ice between the North Trip and the Middle Trip, but fortunately the echo was the worst part of it and I was none the worse for it. All in all, it was a good hike, albeit a bit strenuous. |
