Great day for a loop hike! We did the loop up Gunstock, over to Belknap, and then Piper. We carried spikes with us today but never put them on.
Heading up to Gunstock the trail had mud, water, and wet rocks/roots, but nothing too significant, and no snow or ice along this stretch of the loop. We opted to walk out onto the ski trails to check out the view. Ski trails still have quite a bit of packed snow on them.
From Gunstock summit down to the junction of the Saddle Trail and Blue Trail, there were more patches of mud and water. From the Blue Trail up to Belknap, there were more significant stretches of snow and ice (mostly ice). With caution, you can navigate the snow and ice without putting spikes on just by walking carefully over it.
Coming down from Belknap there were a few more sections of ice, but manageable with caution. Heading up and down Piper was a breeze. Areas of mud and water on the trails, so make sure you have waterproof boots! |
