Barebooted to the last major crossing on Hancock Loop trail, partly from laziness and mostly so I could move faster and not fight the spikes for the flat first few miles. Went up the North peak first like always since its steeper and icier side and it was a good move. Extremely bony and semi crusted ice/crusty snow, the couple inches of snowfall today really helped increase the grip of my spikes. Although a guy made it down that side today, he said it was very sketchy. Quality mountaineering footwork and aggressive usage of trees for hand/footholds and leverage points was required to make it up with the hillsound spikes. This is a no fall zone and would strongly recommend full crampons if descending from the north peak. Ridge was monorail with some ugly crunchy crust atop it. Down South peak is in great condition for descent with a rare spring find of crusty packed pow/loose granular that made for a delightful cruise down to the loop jct and then an easy cruise out to the car |
