It's spring time in the Whites and we got a little bit of everything. What you want to wear I think depends on your personality. Do you hate it more when you're missing equipment that might be helpful or carrying equipment that you don't end up using? I microspiked the whole way based on previous recommendations, and so did the only other people I saw on the trail, coming up around noon. But that didn't mean it was easy. Trail is mostly mud/leaves/dry for the first 1.5 miles, but once you get onto the northern slopes of the ravine you'll encounter consistent snow-pack that by afternoon was soft enough to post-hole in occasionally. Climbing up the weather was rain showers, sun, snow, then more sun. There was one stretch near the summit that was so steep I wished I had crampons. Quiet trail though, not much traffic. |
