Learned quickly that Pemi trail is not the preferred connector in the notch in the winter. Postholed a few times before giving up and walking the bike path from the Falling Waters/OBP lot to the Greenleaf trailhead. First quarter to half mile of Greenleaf would make you wish you were wearing spikes if you weren’t, and if you were wearing them you’d wish they were off. The combo of icy monorail and bare trail/rock. Greenleaf gets much better heading up although it seems maybe only one other hiker has traveled it in recent days. Eagle Pass to Greenleaf Hut was very slow because of this. Loose mashed potato snow that made for a real calf burner. Not a packed sidewalk like OBP but not so much new snow to make it a regrettable slog. Not so bad from hut to summit but light traction is absolutely necessary as some spots are still very icy. OBP going down was fine, there are sections of exposed rock on the Agonies that’ll make your spikes sound wonderful. ;) Down low it’s really starting to soften up with the warmer temps. |
