Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The depot lot was closed and the parking spaces by the picnic tables closest to the trailhead has just filled up so we parked by a nearby snow bank instead. To our surprise, at 9:45am, it wasn’t that busy and there were little to no cars parked on the road yet!! And on the weekend no less!!
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Ice - Blue, Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: We crossed a little bit upstream of the brook crossing just because it was easier. Water was high but the crossing was still easy enough.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The trail is blazed in yellow. Blazing is fairly regular down low and becomes less frequent as you ascend. The trail is easy to follow. No blowdowns that I recall but the sign for the trail where it diverges from Avalon Trail is missing!!
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw a few. Well behaved as far as I recall. Good trail for dogs.
Bugs
Bugs: None
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: None

Comments
Comments: Day 153, Peak 143. Had done Willard years ago with my folks but didn’t do the short whack to the highpoint so my family revisited this one together :) Clouds gave way to sun just before noon though it was very windy!

The trail was in great condition for spikes. Maybe about halfway up the trail became very icy though so I wouldn’t recommend dull rock beaters. The snow is still more or less consistent the entire way so I wouldn’t worry about beating them up anyway. At the ledges, my father and I headed back into the woods and walked to the unrecognized highpoint: there were signs of recent travel here. We followed the footsteps to what we deemed to be the highpoint. No jar and if there’s a cairn, it’s under the snow. As others have noted, the summit area is a bit flat so hard to be 100% certain in a highpoint especially with snow still on the ground but I’ve seen much flatter and trickier spots. If you were careful where you stepped, you didn’t really need snowshoes. It wasn’t worth bringing them to me given conditions.

212 more days and 222 more peaks to go…
