It turns out that, today at least, it was still winter if you hiked far enough uphill. Crawford Connector is 90% ice, 10% mud and puddles. Crawford Path is ice and slush at low elevations. The higher you climb, the harder the ice gets until it turns to packed snow above the split. Mitzpah Cutoff was an inch of creamy fresh snow over hard ice. Webster Cliff Trail between the hut and Pierce was similar. Anything the wind can get to has been scoured to ice or rock in the alpine zone. Spikes were absolutely necessary but also adequate for the whole trail. My snowshoes rode round trip on my pack. Beautiful sunset in the wind from the top of Pierce. It was 50F in the parking lot and 20F with rocking winds on the ridge line. |
