 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
There were many cars in the lot at 10:45am, but also many spaces still open. It was the same when we left. |
 | Surface Conditions: |
Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant, Snow/Ice - Small Patches |
 | Recommended Equipment: |
 | Water Crossing Notes: |
All stream crossings were rock-hoppable. There was one on Brook Trail that I crossed with waterproof boots on rocks one inch underwater, but probably this too could have been avoided with care. |
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
There were a few downed trees that were easy to go over or around. The AMC Southern New Hamphshire Trail Guide mentions that the Mt. Major Trail at 1.3 mi forks, with "Main Trail via ledges" to the right and "Main Trail---ledge detour" to the left, rejoining at 1.4 mi just before the summit at 1.5 mi, but we did not see the fork or the rejoining as we ascended; perhaps those could be more prominently labeled. |
 | Dog-Related Notes: |
Many happy dogs, especially on the Brook Trail. |
 | Bugs: |
None. |
 | Lost and Found: |
Saw a hat marked "R" that someone had hung at the start of the Mt. Major Trail. |

 | Comments: |
We barebooted the whole trip. The ledges near the top of Mt. Major Trail were mostly dry, but a few of the scrambles had ice and snow in places. With care, one could manage to avoid essentially all the ice and snow, so microspikes were not needed, though some might feel more comfortable with them on these short sections. Brook Trail is muddy or icy in many places, so it seems that most hikers have been walking along the sides of the official trail.
The view was very clear. Mountains with tops above treeline were easy to identify: Mt. Washington in the background was the only one that appeared to be solid white, and Mt. Moosilauke had some white visible at the top too. |
